Floating Tea Room 松風庵

An Omotesenke-style tea room situated on a hill overlooking the ocean. This project involved renovating a room on the second floor of a detached house.
A large south-facing window captures the ever-changing nature as “shakkei” (borrowed scenery). On the eastern window, a bamboo lattice was installed to integrate the neighboring bamboo grove into the interior. A black steel plate suspended on the wall serves as a contemporary alternative to a traditional “tokonoma” alcove.
With the ceiling and walls finished in black, the tea room’s domain is defined by five distinct elements emerging from the darkness: the sea window, the bamboo window, the steel-plate alcove, the latticed ceiling, and the tatami floor.
